Broken garage door spring repair

It usually happens with a bang, like a shot in the garage. Then the opener hums and the door barely moves. It's the most common garage door repair in Estero, and the one where people get overcharged the most.

Signs this is your problem

  • You heard a loud bang from the garage with no one inside.
  • There's a gap of an inch or two in the spring above the door.
  • The opener strains, lifts the door a few inches and stops.
  • The door feels far heavier than usual when you lift it by hand.

What we do

We measure the old spring (wire size, length, inside diameter) and match it to the weight of your door so it balances. We replace it, check the cables and drums while the tension is off, lubricate the hardware and test the door by hand and with the opener. The spring size goes on your invoice, so whoever works on your door next knows exactly what's there.

One spring or two?

Most two-car doors in Estero have two torsion springs of the same age. When one breaks, the other is usually close behind. Replacing both saves you a second visit, and we write both options so you choose. If your door has one spring, it gets one spring.

Salt, humidity and springs

A standard spring is rated for about 10,000 cycles. Near the bay, the river and the canals, rust can shorten that to five to seven years. For homes on the water we offer coated springs. More about salt air.

The one-hour job

A spring job takes about an hour and needs a spring, sometimes two. If a quote for a broken spring also lists a new opener or a "rebuild kit", ask the tech to show you what's wrong with each part before you sign.

Questions about broken spring repair

About an hour for one torsion spring, a little more for the pair. Most calls in Estero are fixed the same day.

We don't recommend it. A wound torsion spring holds enough energy to break a wrist or worse. Extension springs are less dangerous but still need safety cables.

About 10,000 cycles, seven to ten years for most families. Close to salt water, five to seven.
